Are you at a heightened risk of developing skin cancer? Dr. Christopher Cassetty and the team at Hunterdon Dermatology, LLC in Flemington, NJ share common risk factors below.
No one is immune to developing skin cancer, but some people are at a higher risk than others. In this guide, Below are some of the most common risk factors associated with skin cancer.
The sun is a great source of vitamin D. It’s also beneficial for mental health and provides a great chance to get outdoors with family, friends, and hobbies. However, excessive exposure – especially when your skin isn’t protected – is a different story.
Tanning beds can actually be more dangerous than hanging out in the sun unprotected. That’s because they give off up to three times as many UV rays as the sun which are directly related to skin cancer development.
What happens to your skin when you hang out in the sun? If it reddens or burns easily, freckles appear or increase in number, or it causes pain, you have a higher risk of developing skin cancer.
If someone in your family has had skin cancer, your risk is considered increased due to genetics and environmental exposures. Additionally, if you have personally had a melanoma or another form of skin cancer, you have a higher risk of developing it again.
People with a lighter skin color are at greater risk than those with darker skin tones. Those with blue or green eyes or red or blond hair also fit into this group.
Having a few moles doesn’t necessarily mean anything. However, those who have a large number of moles, big moles, or atypical moles are at a greater risk.
